The Date in the Diary Story

Hello. I’m Lisa, founder of Date in the Diary. You never dream you will end up a mid-life divorcee and single again! That was me, out of the blue in 2018! I was lucky to have an amazing group of friends and a good social life, but when my kids weren’t around, sometimes I just craved to get out and do something but there wasn’t always someone to do that with!

I was on/off app dating. That was exhausting and a swiping lottery! Judging if someone is “right” just from a photo, the try-hard tagline is never easy. Nobody can warn you of the emotional hours you’ll spend having a conversation over message, only to end up being disappointed either being ghosted ornate fancying the people you do finally meet.

After rather too many negative dating app experiences, I decided there must be an alternative! A different way to avoid the pressure of one-to-one dates, and instead – enjoy single life with a bunch of people in the same situation. So, after sharing these thoughts with other single friends in their 40s and 50s, I set up Date in the Diary in 2022!

A date to make in-person connections with groups of like-minded single people, naturally – you know like we used to! Doing something fun, anexperience, or an event. No expectations and no disappointment. If you happen to meet someone you’re attracted to romantically, then it’s a bonus – and a “date”! But in the meantime you can make lots of genuine friendships and connections!

Date in the Diary is over 2 years old now, we have grown organically and changed things along the way. I’m constantly engaging with our members to understand what type of events and activities they are interested in and getting feedback and recommendations. These conversations have informed the many events we host, along with lots of social get-togethers. Going into our third year, we are going from strength to strength.

This isn’t some algorithm-based service: it’s back to meeting people in person in a social environment. The old-fashioned way! What has been fantastic is the Date in the Diary community that has formed; a group of like minded, fun, single people – that keeps growing. Some genuine friendships have formed, there have been many dates and quite a few couples (3 of whom are all hitting 2 years together).

We are not about quantity but quality. Anyone reading this probably has experience of walking into a single’s event and feeling like those people are just not your people. Our member referral does keep the right, like minded people joining and thats why the formula works. Everyone is welcome, whether you’re divorced, separated, a single parent, widowed or just been single for a while. And we are spreading our Date in the Diary love having launched Date in the Diary Surrey and Date in the Diary Wiltshire in 2024 and we are going to grow further in 2025!

There has honestly never been a better time to find yourself single and live your best single life.

Thank you and I hope to speak to you very soon. Lisa xx

More about Lisa

Hi, I’m Lisa and the founder and Director of Date in the Diary. You have hopefully read my story of how and why I set Date in the Diary up. I absolutely running this and feel we have something very unique and special.

I have been divorced for 5 years, I am currently navigating the teenage years with 2 of them, one 16 and one 14 – no one told you about these years at NCT classes, did they!? So I moonlight as a teenage uber driving service mostly (oh and chef) and drive them around from place to place. But I wouldn’t give it up for anything, I am immensely proud of them and they in turn are proud of me and that the fact that th entrepreneurial flair that was always in me, is now alive and thriving. I mean if I would have still been married I would have Date in the Diary. This is my business and my life but also has made life better for me personally, as I have made some friends for life through doing this! All the members are incredibly supportive of what I do and I cannot be anymore thankful for that. There really is a lot to be said for being single, it has many many advantages!

More about Ali

Hi, I’m Ali, 45, in the middle of a lengthy divorce, mum of three, living near Godalming. I’ve been a single mum for nearly nine years.

I’ve been a single mum for nearly nine years. I’ve had a lot of first dates from the “apps”, a longish relationship that ended two years ago, but know that the only true way to make a connection is through friendship and doing fun things together.

I joined DITD in March 2024 and run the events in Surrey. I love this job! I’ve learnt to play Padel Tennis, rekindled my love of polo and played virtual cricket all through the events we put on. I was also invited to join some of our Surrey ladies on a speed dating night out. Well at least I can say I’ve tried it!

I now have a great bunch of single friends, they’re not my clients they truly are my friends x

Fiona

Events Host

More about Fiona

I’m Fi, a PT instructor and mum of two older daughters, 27 and 20. I live in Marlborough, Wiltshire and I have been single for a year after a 5 year relationship.

Now that my daughters have moved out , I feel it’s time to work on myself and concentrate on me !! I have tried online dating and have had a few dates, but have not found any real connections.
After talking to a client one day who told me about DITD Henley , I thought what an amazing idea but such a shame I lived so far away then a few conservations later and here I am bringing the DITD formula into Wiltshire! I am so excited about this new adventure and to see where it is going to go!
It is still early days but I feel that this is the beginning of something really special!
We have run 2 successful events so far and are planning on having one a month. I am really looking forward to seeing where DITD Wiltshire is going to go and making lots of new single friends along the way.
